The Good News of the Gospel is in the cross of Calvary, when God extended grace toward all humanity. Words cannot express the wonders of His Grace so graphically illustrated in that bloody cross. Grace can be defined as “unmerited favour to the infinitely ill-deserving,” or in other words, “Gods riches at Christ's expense.”

The question that should be on the heart of every Christian is how we may best show Gods amazing grace to this lost world. We tell sinners God loved them so much that He gave His only begotten Son to die in their place, and yet it seems to have less relevance than the day’s weather forecast!

The solution to this dilemma can be found in Romans 5:20. Here we are told why God gave us His Law: The Law entered, that the offence might abound. But were sin abounded, grace did much more abound. When sin abounds, grace much more abounds, and according to scripture, the thing that makes sin abound is the law!

We can see the work of Gods law illustrated in the civil law. When there is no visible sign of the law on the motorway motorists often break the speed limit. He knows he’s going 10 miles to fast but so is everyone else! Suddenly red lights start flashing, his heart misses a beat. He no longer feel secure in the knowledge that other motorists are speeding. He knows he is personally as guilty as the other guy and he could be the next one the law pulls over.

Look at the motorway of sin. The whole world goes with the flow. Who hasn’t lied or stolen. Sinners know there doing wrong, but their security is in the fact that many others are just as guilty. Now watch the law enter with the red flashing lights. The sinners heart skips a beat. He lays his hand over his mouth. He examines the speedometer of his conscience. Suddenly it shows him guilty. His sense of security in the sins of others becomes irrelevant, because “every man shall give an account of himself.” His sin has now become personal, it seems to abound. His mere lust becomes adultery of the heart (Matthew 5:27-28); His white lie false witness (Revelation 21:8); His hatred murder (1John 3:15). “Moreover the law entered that the offences might abound.” Without the law entering, sin isn’t personal or evident. “For without the law, sin is dead [is inactive] Romans 7:8 Amplified.
